(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Keeping promises is the practice of the honourable ones.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's commitments and remaining true to one's word. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (wafaa) "وَفاء" in Arabic, which is translated as "keeping promises" in English, carries a significant weight. It encompasses not only fulfilling one's obligations but also maintaining loyalty, trustworthiness, and sincerity in all aspects of life. The term (sunnah) "سُنَّةُ" refers to a practice or tradition, and here it signifies a virtuous and commendable act.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of fulfilling promises in the Quran. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 34, Allah says,

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse highlights the accountability we will face regarding our promises on the Day of Judgment. Fulfilling our commitments is not only a matter of personal integrity but also a reflection of our faith and devotion to Allah.

Moreover, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 1, Allah says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the obligation upon believers to honor their agreements and contracts. It serves as a reminder that fulfilling promises is not just a moral duty but also a religious obligation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the noble character of those who uphold their promises. It reflects his profound understanding of the teachings of Islam and his commitment to embodying them in his own life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his wisdom, knowledge, and impeccable integrity. His words serve as a guiding light for Muslims, reminding us of the importance of being trustworthy and dependable individuals.

Keeping promises has far-reaching consequences in our personal and social lives. When we fulfill our commitments, we build trust and strengthen our relationships with others. People rely on us and feel confident in our words and actions. Conversely, breaking promises erodes trust, damages relationships, and leads to a breakdown in society.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be people of integrity who honor our commitments, whether they are formal agreements or informal promises. We should be mindful of the words we speak and the promises we make, ensuring that we have the intention and ability to fulfill them. By doing so, we not only follow the example of the honorable ones but also fulfill our duty as Muslims to uphold the principles of honesty, trustworthiness, and accountability.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of keeping promises. It reminds us that fulfilling our commitments is not only a matter of personal integrity but also a religious obligation. By honoring our promises, we build trust, strengthen relationships, and contribute to a harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be people of integrity who uphold our promises and follow the path of the honorable ones.
