بِقَدْرِ الهِمَمِ تَكُونُ الهُمُومُ۔
Worries [and concerns] are [proportionate] to the extent of [one’s] endeavours.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Endeavours)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
بِقَدْرِ الهِمَمِ تَكُونُ الهُمُومُ۔
This can be translated as:
Worries [and concerns] are [proportionate] to the extent of [one’s] endeavors.
Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The word (himam) "هِمَمِ" refers to one's endeavors, aspirations, or determination. It signifies the level of effort and dedication that a person puts into achieving their goals. The word (humoom) "هُمُومُ" refers to worries, concerns, or anxieties. It represents the mental and emotional burden that one experiences as a result of their endeavors.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not burden us with more than we can handle. It implies that the worries and concerns we face in life are in proportion to our abilities and efforts.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Inshirah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 94:5)
Verily, with hardship, there is relief.
This verse reassures us that even in times of difficulty and worry, there is always a relief and ease that follows. It reminds us that our worries are temporary and that Allah's mercy and assistance are always near.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we can derive several profound insights. Firstly, it teaches us that worries and concerns are a natural consequence of our endeavors and aspirations. When we strive for something, it is inevitable that we will face challenges and obstacles along the way. These difficulties bring about worries and concerns as we navigate through the journey of achieving our goals.
Secondly, this Hadith reminds us that our worries are not without purpose. They are a reflection of our determination and efforts. The greater our aspirations and endeavors, the greater the worries and concerns we may experience. This serves as a motivation for us to persist in our efforts and not be discouraged by the weight of our worries. It is a reminder that our worries are a testament to our commitment and dedication towards our goals.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages us to have a balanced perspective on worries and concerns. While they may be burdensome, they are also a sign of growth and progress. They indicate that we are actively engaged in pursuing our aspirations and striving for excellence. Instead of being overwhelmed by our worries, we should view them as opportunities for personal development and spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that worries and concerns are proportional to the extent of our endeavors. It reminds us that our worries are not without purpose and that they are a natural consequence of our determination and efforts. By understanding the wisdom behind this Hadith and reflecting on the supporting Quranic verses, we can develop a balanced perspective on worries and use them as a means for personal growth and spiritual advancement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to face our worries with patience and resilience.
