Verily Allah, the Glorified, checked the earth and chose for us followers who would help us, would be gladdened by our joy and saddened by our sadness, and would spend from their persons and their possessions in our way – these are the ones who are from us and shall rejoin us [in the Hereafter].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Followers (Shi‘a))

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the special relationship between Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt. It begins by stating that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has surveyed the earth and handpicked a group of individuals who are known as the Shia, the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt. These chosen ones are described as being devoted to Imam Ali and his progeny, supporting them in times of need, and sharing in their joy and sorrow.

The term "Shia" refers to those who have pledged their allegiance to the Ahl al-Bayt and have dedicated themselves to following their teachings and guidance. The word "Shia" itself means "followers" or "supporters," and in this context, it specifically refers to the followers of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his descendants.

The Hadith emphasizes the qualities and characteristics of the Shia. They are described as individuals who not only support the Ahl al-Bayt but also find joy in their happiness and are saddened by their sorrows. This shows the deep emotional connection and love that the Shia have for the Ahl al-Bayt. They are not mere followers but true companions who share in their joys and sorrows.

Furthermore, the Hadith mentions that the Shia are willing to sacrifice themselves and their wealth for the sake of the Ahl al-Bayt. This highlights their selflessness and dedication to the cause of Imam Ali and his progeny. They are willing to give everything they have, both material and spiritual, in support of the Ahl al-Bayt.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of following the righteous leaders and supporting them in their mission. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:103)

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers

This verse emphasizes the unity and solidarity among the believers. It highlights the importance of holding onto the teachings and guidance of Allah and not allowing divisions to weaken the community. The Shia, as described in the Hadith, are those who have united under the banner of Imam Ali and his progeny, recognizing their leadership and following their teachings.

Another verse that supports the concept of Shia is found in Surah Al-Anfal, where Allah says, (Quran 48:10)

Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself. And he who fulfills that which he has promised Allah - He will give him a great reward

This verse highlights the significance of pledging allegiance to the righteous leaders chosen by Allah. It emphasizes that by pledging allegiance to the chosen leaders, one is actually pledging allegiance to Allah Himself. The Shia, as described in the Hadith, are those who have pledged their allegiance to Imam Ali and his progeny, recognizing their divine appointment and authority.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the special relationship between Allah and the Shia, the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt. It emphasizes their unwavering support, their emotional connection, and their willingness to sacrifice for the sake of the Ahl al-Bayt. This Hadith is a reminder for all Muslims to follow the teachings and guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt and to strive to be true Shia, who are devoted to their cause and seek to emulate their noble qualities. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the honor of being counted among the true Shia.
