(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wretchedness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مِنْ عَلامَةِ الشَّقاءِ غِشُّ الصَّديقِ۔

This can be translated as:

One of the signs of wretchedness is cheating one’s friend.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (wretchedness) "شَّقاءِ" refers to a state of extreme unhappiness, misery, and misfortune. It signifies a condition of deep sorrow and despair. The word (cheating) "غِشُّ" refers to deceiving, betraying, or tricking someone by dishonest means. And the word (one's friend) "الصَّديقِ" refers to a close companion or confidant.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and honesty in various verses. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the significance of being just and truthful, even if it means going against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It emphasizes the importance of integrity and honesty in all aspects of our lives, including our relationships with friends.

Cheating one's friend is a grave betrayal of trust and a violation of the principles of honesty and fairness. It not only harms the person being cheated but also reflects poorly on the character and moral fiber of the one who cheats. Such behavior leads to a state of wretchedness and misery, as it goes against the teachings of Islam and the values of righteousness.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse reminds us of the importance of treating others with respect and dignity. It warns against mocking or belittling others, as it can lead to a state of wretchedness. Cheating one's friend falls under the category of disrespect and betrayal, which can have severe consequences on both the cheater and the one being cheated.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the detrimental effects of cheating one's friend. By engaging in such deceitful behavior, one not only damages their own character but also destroys the trust and bond that should exist between friends. This betrayal can lead to broken relationships, emotional pain, and a sense of isolation.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of upholding the values of honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity in our interactions with others. As Muslims, we should strive to be people of integrity, who are known for their honesty and loyalty. By doing so, we not only fulfill our religious obligations but also contribute to a harmonious and just society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be truthful and trustworthy individuals, and protect us from the wretchedness of betraying the trust of our friends. Ameen.
