مَنِ اتَّقَى اللّهَ وَقاهُ۔
Whoever fears Allah, He protects him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The God-Wary And Godfearing People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنِ اتَّقَى اللّهَ وَقاهُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever fears Allah, He protects him.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (ittaqa) "اتَّقَى" is derived from the root word (waqa) "وَقَى", which means to protect, guard, or shield oneself from harm. It encompasses the concept of God-consciousness, piety, and fearing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is an active state of mind and heart that drives a person to avoid anything that displeases Allah and to strive towards righteousness.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of taqwa throughout the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197, Allah says,
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse highlights that taqwa is the ultimate provision for our journey in this world. It is through taqwa that we attain true success and protection from the trials and tribulations of life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13, Allah says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that the criterion for superiority and honor in the sight of Allah is righteousness and taqwa. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly status.
Now, let us reflect on the second part of the Hadith, (waqah) "وَقاهُ". This word is derived from the same root as (ittaqa) "اتَّقَى" and carries the meaning of protection and safeguarding. When a person truly fears Allah and strives to live a life of taqwa, Allah, in His infinite mercy, becomes their protector and guardian. He shields them from harm, both in this world and the Hereafter.
In Surah At-Talaq, verse 2-3, Allah says,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
These verses assure us that when we fear Allah and rely on Him, He will guide us through difficulties, provide for us from unexpected sources, and fulfill His promises.
The consequences of practicing taqwa and experiencing Allah's protection are manifold. Firstly, it brings about inner peace and tranquility. When we fear Allah and strive to please Him, our hearts are filled with contentment and serenity. Secondly, it safeguards us from falling into sin and disobedience. Taqwa acts as a shield that prevents us from engaging in actions that displease Allah and harm our souls. Thirdly, it leads to success in this world and the Hereafter. Allah's protection ensures that we are guided towards righteousness and rewarded with eternal bliss.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and piety, reminds us of the importance of taqwa in this Hadith. By cultivating taqwa, we establish a deep connection with Allah and become recipients of His divine protection. Let us strive to fear Allah in all aspects of our lives, seeking His pleasure and relying on Him for guidance and support. May Allah grant us the ability to attain true taqwa and experience His unwavering protection.
