Hadith #9647

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

Whoever praises you for that which is not in you, then it is actually a criticism of you if you think about it.

The word (madahaka) "مَدَحَكَ" in the Hadith refers to praising someone, while (zamm) "ذَمٌّ" means criticism or blame. And they say, 'Be Jews or Christians, then you will be guided.' Say, 'Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of following the truth and not being swayed by the opinions or praise of others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states: (Quran 4:135)

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being just and truthful, even if it goes against our own interests or the expectations of others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us to be self-aware and to strive for sincerity in our words and actions. It urges us to reflect upon the true nature of our character and to avoid being deceived by false praise. By doing so, we can maintain our integrity and ensure that our actions align with our true selves.

If we allow ourselves to be swayed by false praise, we may fall into the trap of hypocrisy and lose sight of our true purpose in life. The Quran warns us against hypocrisy in Surah Al-Baqarah, stating: (Quran 2:8-9)

And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers. They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.

This verse highlights the consequences of hypocrisy and the self-deception that comes with it.
