مَنْ أطاعَ غَضَبَهُ تَعَجَّلَ تَلَفُهُ۔
Whoever submits to his anger, his ruin is hastened.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anger)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أطاعَ غَضَبَهُ تَعَجَّلَ تَلَفُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever submits to his anger, his ruin is hastened.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (ata'a) "أطاعَ" means to obey or submit to, while (ghadabahu) "غَضَبَهُ" refers to one's anger. The word (ta'ajjala) "تَعَجَّلَ" means to hasten or expedite, and (talafohu) "تَلَفُهُ" refers to one's destruction or ruin.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of anger and its consequences in several verses.
In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,
Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of controlling our anger and pardoning others, as it is an act that is beloved to Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), Allah advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.
This verse teaches us to turn away from ignorance and seek refuge in Allah when faced with anger or negative thoughts.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to control their anger and not let it dictate their actions. When we submit to our anger and allow it to control us, we are hastening our own destruction. Anger can cloud our judgment, lead to hasty decisions, and damage relationships.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and he understood the detrimental effects of anger. He exemplified this in his own life by remaining calm and composed in the face of adversity. His ability to control his anger allowed him to make sound decisions and resolve conflicts peacefully.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see its relevance in our daily lives. When we find ourselves in situations that provoke anger, we should strive to emulate the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran. By restraining our anger, we can maintain our composure, seek peaceful resolutions, and avoid the hastening of our own ruin.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to control their anger and not let it dictate their actions. By submitting to our anger, we are hastening our own destruction. The Quran provides further guidance on the importance of controlling anger and seeking refuge in Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to control our anger and follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
