(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

خَيْرُ الأعْمالِ ما زانَهُ الرِّفْقُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

The best of deeds is that which is adorned by kindness.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (a'mal) "أعْمالِ" refers to actions or deeds. It encompasses all acts performed by an individual, whether they are physical, verbal, or even intentions. The word (zana) "زانَهُ" means to adorn or beautify. It implies that an action becomes more virtuous and praiseworthy when it is accompanied by a particular quality. And finally, the word (rifq) "الرِّفْقُ" translates to kindness, gentleness, or compassion.

To understand the significance of kindness in our actions, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in a kind and gentle manner, as it promotes unity and discourages discord. It encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and to always strive for the best in their speech.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their background or status. It reminds us that belittling or insulting others is not befitting of a believer and goes against the principles of Islam.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that performing good deeds is not limited to the action itself. Rather, the true value of a deed lies in the way it is carried out, with kindness and compassion. For example, giving charity is a virtuous act, but when it is done with a genuine concern for the well-being of others and a desire to alleviate their suffering, it becomes even more praiseworthy. Similarly, offering prayers is an essential part of our worship, but when performed with a gentle and humble heart, it becomes a means of spiritual elevation and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Kindness has far-reaching consequences in our lives as Muslims. It not only strengthens our relationships with others but also enhances our own spiritual growth. When we approach our actions with kindness, we create an atmosphere of love and compassion within our communities. We become a source of comfort and support for those around us, and our actions become a reflection of the teachings of Islam. Moreover, kindness has a transformative effect on our own souls, purifying our intentions and increasing our proximity to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the best of deeds are those that are adorned with kindness. It reminds us that our actions should not only be outwardly righteous but also accompanied by a gentle and compassionate approach. By embodying kindness in our deeds, we can strive to emulate the noble character of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to perform deeds that are truly adorned by kindness, and may He bless us with His mercy and guidance.
