The Child

A righteous child is the more beautiful of the two recollections. اَلْوَلَدُ الصّالِحُ أجْمَلُ الذِّكْرَيْنِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم A child is one of the two enemies. اَلْوَلَدُ أحَدُ العَدُوَّيْنِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The worst of all children is the undutiful one. شَرُّ الأوْلادِ اَلْعاقُّ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The loss of a child burns the heart. فَقْدُ الوَلَدِ مُحْرِقُ الكَبِدِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The death of a child is [like a] tear in the heart. مَوْتُ الوَلَدِ صَدْعٌ فِي الكَبِدِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم An evil child destroys one’s honour and disgraces one’s ancestors. وَلَدُ السُّوءِ يَهْدِمُ الشَّرَفَ، ويَشينُ السَّلَفَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم An evil child dishonours one’s ancestors and corrupts one’s descendants. وَلَدُ السُّوءِ يَعُرُّ السَّلَفَ، ويُفْسِدُ الخَلَفَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The undutiful child is a tribulation and a misfortune. وَلَدٌ عَقُوقٌ مِحْنَةٌ وشُؤْمٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
