Joking is a [cause of] separation that is followed by rancour.
اَلمُزاحُ فِرْقَةٌ تَتْبَعُها ضَغِْينَةٌ۔

Excessiveness in joking is foolishness.
اَلإفْراطُ فِي المَزْحِ خُرْقٌ۔

Abandon [excessive] joking for indeed it is the conception of rancour.
دَعِ المُزاحَ فَإنَّهُ لِقاحُ الضَّغينَةِ۔

In impudence and excessive joking there is foolishness.
فيِ السَّفَهِ وكَثْرَةِ المُزاحِ الخُرْقُ۔

Too much joking diminishes one’s reverence [and dignity].
كَثْرَةُ المُزاحِ تُسْقِطُ الهَيبَةَ۔

Too much joking takes away prestige and brings about enmity [and rancour].
كَثْرَةُ المُزاحِ تُذْهِبُ البَهاءَ وتُوجِبُ الشَّهْناءَ۔

Everything has a seed, and the seed of enmity is joking.
لِكُلِّ شَيْء بَذْرٌ، وبَذْرُ العَداوَةِ المُزاحُ۔

One who jokes [excessively] is taken lightly.
مَنْ مَزَحَ اُسْتُخِفَّ بِهِ۔

One whose joking increases is deemed ignorant.
مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ اُسْتُجْهِلَ۔

One whose joking is excessive is considered a fool.
مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ اُسْتُحْمِقَ۔

One whose joking increases, his reverence [and dignity] decreases.
مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ قَلَّتْ هَيْبَتُهُ۔

مَنْ كَثُرَ مَزْحُهُ قَلَّ وَقارُهُ۔

Any time a person makes a joke, he parts with a portion of his intellect.
ما مَزَحَ امْرُءٌ مَزْحَةً إلاّ مَجَّ مِنْ عَقْلِهِ مَجَّةً۔
