Joking

Joking is a [cause of] separation that is followed by rancour. اَلمُزاحُ فِرْقَةٌ تَتْبَعُها ضَغِْينَةٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Beware of recalling that which was funny in the speech [of others], even if you narrate it from... إيّاكَ أنْ تَذْكُرَ مِنَ الكَلامِ (ماكانَ) مُضْحِكاً، وإنْ حَكَيْتَهُ عَنْ غَيْرِكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Excessiveness in joking is foolishness. اَلإفْراطُ فِي المَزْحِ خُرْقٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Abandon [excessive] joking for indeed it is the conception of rancour. دَعِ المُزاحَ فَإنَّهُ لِقاحُ الضَّغينَةِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم In impudence and excessive joking there is foolishness. فيِ السَّفَهِ وكَثْرَةِ المُزاحِ الخُرْقُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Too much joking diminishes one’s reverence [and dignity]. كَثْرَةُ المُزاحِ تُسْقِطُ الهَيبَةَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Too much joking takes away prestige and brings about enmity [and rancour]. كَثْرَةُ المُزاحِ تُذْهِبُ البَهاءَ وتُوجِبُ الشَّهْناءَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Everything has a seed, and the seed of enmity is joking. لِكُلِّ شَيْء بَذْرٌ، وبَذْرُ العَداوَةِ المُزاحُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who jokes [excessively] is taken lightly. مَنْ مَزَحَ اُسْتُخِفَّ بِهِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose joking increases is deemed ignorant. مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ اُسْتُجْهِلَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose joking is excessive is considered a fool. مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ اُسْتُحْمِقَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose joking increases, his reverence [and dignity] decreases. مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ قَلَّتْ هَيْبَتُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose joking increases, his dignity diminishes. مَنْ كَثُرَ مَزْحُهُ قَلَّ وَقارُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever jokes excessively will never be without one who bears a grudge against him and one who... مَنْ كَثُرَ مُزاحُهُ لَمْ يَخْلُ مِنْ حاقِد عَلَيْهِ ومُسْتَخِفّ بِهِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Any time a person makes a joke, he parts with a portion of his intellect. ما مَزَحَ امْرُءٌ مَزْحَةً إلاّ مَجَّ مِنْ عَقْلِهِ مَجَّةً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Do not make fun of a noble person such that he ends up bearing a grudge against you. لاتُمازِحِ الشَّريفَ فَيَحْقِدَ عَلَيْكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Never make fun of a friend thereby turning him into an enemy, or of an enemy thereby making him... لاتُمازِحَنَّ صَديقاً فَيُعادِيَكَ، ولاعَدُوّاً فَيُرْدِيَكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
