One who is not set aright by high esteem is put right by indignity.
مَنْ لَمْ تُقَوِّمْهُ الكَرامَةُ قَوَّمَتْهُ الإهانَةُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who is not reformed by high esteem is reformed by indignity.
مَنْ لَمْ تُصْلِحْهُ الكَرامَةُ أصْلَحَتْهُ الإهانَةُ۔

It is a right upon one whose esteem has been increased by Allah that he should [in turn] be more...
مَنْ زادَهُ اللّهُ كَرامَةً فَحَقيقٌ بِه أنْ يَزيدَ النّاسَ إكْراماً۔

One who is raised by disgrace is made vain by high esteem.
مَنْ رَبّاهُ الهَوانُ أبْطَرَتْهُ الكَرامَةُ۔
