Weeping out of fear of Allah, because of being far from Allah, is the worship of the cognizant.
اَلبُكاءُ مِنْ خيفَةِ اللّهِ لِلْبُعْدِ عَنِ اللّهِ عِبادةُ العارِفينَ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Weeping out of the fear of Allah illuminates the heart and protects [one] from repetition of sin.
اَلبُكاءُ مِنْ خَشيَةِ اللّهِ يُنيرُ القَلبَ ويَعْصِمُ مِنْ مُعاوَدَةِ الذَّنْبِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Weeping out of the fear of Allah is the key to [divine] mercy.
اَلبُكاءُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللّهِ مِفْتاحُ الرَّحمَةِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Weeping is the trait of the soft-hearted [and those who fear Allah].
البُكاءُ سَجِيَّةُ المُشْفِقينَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
By weeping out of the fear of Allah, sins get purified.
بِالبُكاءِ مِنْ خَشيَةِ اللّهِ تُمَحَّصُ الذُّنُوبُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The weeping of a servant out of the fear of Allah clears away his sins.
بُكاءُ العَبْدِ مِنْ خَشيَةِ اللّهِ يُمَحِّصُ ذُنُوبَهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Blessed is the one who is granted success in his worship and weeps because of his sins.
طُوبى لِمَنْ وُفِّقَ لِطاعَتِهِ، وبَكى على خَطيئَتِهِ۔
