Chastity

Chastity preserves the soul and purifies it from vile demerits. اَلعِفافُ يَصُونُ النَّفْسَ، ويُنَزِّهُها عَنِ الدَّنايا۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity weakens lust. اَلعِفَّةُ تُضَعِّفُ الشَّهْوَةَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity is renunciation [of worldly pleasures]. اَلعِفافُ زَهادَةٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity is the best (or the root of) magnanimity. اَلعِفَّةُ أفْضَلُ (أصْلُ) الفُتُوَّةِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity is the best trait. اَلعِفافُ أفْضَلُ شيمَة۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity is the trait of the sagacious. اَلعِفَّةُ شيمَةُ الأكْياسِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Chastity is the cornerstone of goodness. اَلعِفَّةُ رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَيْر۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Restraining oneself from [coveting] that which people possess is chastity and high-mindedness. اَلكَفُّ عَمّا في أيْدِي النّاسِ عِفَّةٌ، وكِبَرُ هِمَّة۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The people of chastity are the most honourable of the honourables. (أهْلُ) اَلعَفافُِ أشْرَفُ الأشْرافِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Through chastity actions become purified. بِالعَفافِ تَزْكُوالأعْمالُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The crown of a man is his chastity and his adornment is his equity. تاجُ الرَّجُلِ عَفافُهُ وزَيْنُهُ إنْصافُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The fruit of chastity is preservation [of oneself from chastisement]. ثَمَرَةُ العِفَّةِ الصِّيانَةُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The fruit of chastity is contentment. ثَمَرَةُ العِفَّةِ القَناعَةُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Virtuous chastity is from the traits of the honourable ones. حُسْنُ العَفافِ مِنْ شِيَمِ الأشْرافِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The cause of contentment is chastity. سَبَبُ القَناعَةِ العَفافُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Espouse chastity, for indeed it is a good companion. عَلَيْكَ بِالعِفَّةِ فَإنَّها نِعْمَ القَرينُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Espouse chastity and contentment, for whoever does this, his burden of sustenance is lightened. عَلَيْكَ بِالعَفافِ والقُنُوعِ، فَمَنْ أخَذَبِهِ خَفَّتْ عَلَيْهِ المُؤَنُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Espouse chastity, for indeed it is the best trait of the honourable ones. عَلَيْكَ بِالعَفافِ فَإنَّهُ أفْضَلُ شِيَمِ الأشْرافِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم You must espouse chastity and trustworthiness, for verily these two are the most honourable of what... عَلَيْكُمْ بِلُزُومِ العِفَّةِ، والأمانَةِ، فَإنَّهُما أشْرَفُ ما أسْرَرْتُمْ وأحْسَنُ ما أعْلَنْتُمْ، وأفْضَلُ مَا ادَّخَرْتُمْ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم To the extent of modesty, there is chastity. عَلى قَدْرِ الحَياءِ تَكُونُ العِفَّةُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم I am amazed at the one who knows the evil consequences of [forbidden] pleasures, how can he not... عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ عَرَفَ سُوءَ عَواقِبِ اللَّذّاتِ كَيْفَ لايَعِفُّ؟! —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Just as you desire, be chaste. كَما تَشْتَهي عِفَّ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who desires that which he cannot obtain has not adorned himself with chastity. لَمْ يَتَحَلَّ بِالعِفَّةِ مَنِ اشْتَهى ما لايَجِدُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Whoever is granted chastity and contentment, honour becomes his ally. مَنْ أُتْحِفَ العِفَّةَ والقَناعَةَ، حالَفَهُ العِزُّ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
