Laughter

The best [form of] laughter is a smile. خَيْرُ الضِّحْكِ التَّبَسُّمُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The excessive laughter of a man corrupts his dignity. كَثْرَةُ ضِحْكِ الرَّجُلِ تُفْسِدُ وَقارَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Excessive laughter alienates the companion and disgraces the leader. كَثْرَةُ الضِّحْكِ تُوحِشُ الجَليسَ وتَشينُ الرَّئيسَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose laughter increases, his reverence decreases. مَنْ كَثُرَ ضِحْكُهُ قَلَّتْ هَيْبَتُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose laughter increases, his heart dies. مَنْ كَثُرَ ضِحْكُهُ ماتَ قَلْبُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose laughs excessively is regarded as being low. مَنْ كَثُرَ ضِحْكُهُ اُسْتُرْذِلَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Do not show your teeth [in laughter] while you have done such shameful deeds. لاتُبْدِعَنْ واضِحَة، وَقَدْ فَعَلْتَ الأُمُورَ الفاضِحَةَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Never laugh too much such that your reverence is lost; and do not joke [too much] thereby... لا تُكْثِرَنَّ الضِّحْكَ، فَتَذْهَبَ هَيْبَتُكَ، ولا المُزاحَ فَيُسْتَخَفَّ بِكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
