The eminent one is envied and the munificent one is loved and adored.
اَلسَّيِّدُ مَحْسُودٌ، وَ الجَوادُ مَحْبُوبٌ مَوْدُودٌ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The eminent person is one who bears the burdens of his brothers and is neighborly to his neighbor.
اَلسَّيِّدُ مَنْ تَحَمَّلَ أثْقالَ إخْوانِهِ، وَ أحْسَنَ مُجاوَرَةَ جيرانِهِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The eminent person is one who neither flatters nor deceives, nor is he beguiled by greedy ambitions.
اَلسَّيِّدُ مَنْ لا يُصانِعُ، وَلا يُخادِعُ، وَلا تَغُرُّهُ المَطامِعُ۔

The eminent person is one who bears the responsibility of providing [for others] and is generous...
اَلسَّيِّدُ مَنْ تَحَمَّلَ المَؤُنَةَ، وَجادَ بِالمَعُونَةِ۔

The completion of eminence is in taking the initiative to do good to others.
تَمامُ السُّؤْدَدِ اِبْتِداءُ الصَّنايِعِ۔

The eminent among the people in this world are the generous ones and in the Hereafter, the God-wary.
سادَةُ النّاسِ فِي الدُّنيا الأسْخياءُ، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ الأتْقياءُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The excellence of the eminent ones is in [their] devout worship [of Allah].
فَضيلَةُ السَّادَةِ حُسْنُ العِبادَةِ۔

Righteous action, aiding the aggrieved and inviting guests [to one’s home] are instruments [and...
فِعْلُ المَعْرُوفِ، وَ إغاثَةُ المَلْهُوفِ، وَ إقْراءُ الضُّيُوفِ آلَةُ السّيادَةِ۔

One whose brothers have to turn to other than him [for their needs] has not attained eminence.
لَمْ يَسُدْ مَنِ افْتَقَرَ إخْوانُهُ إلى غَيْرِهِ۔

Listening to the complaint of the aggrieved is part of eminence.
مِنَ السُّؤْدَدِ الصَّبْرُ، لاِسْتِماعِ شَكْوَى المَلْهُوفِ۔

He who does not grant generously has not perfected [his] eminence.
ما أكْمَلَ السِّيادَةَ مَنْ لَمْ يَسْمَحْ۔

He whose brothers need to turn to other than him [for help] has not achieved eminence.
ماسادَ مَنِ احْتاجَ إخْوانُهُ إلى غَيْرِهِ۔

There is no honour like eminence.
لا شَرَفَ كَالسُّؤْدَدِ۔

There is no eminence with vengeance.
لا سُؤْدََدَ مَعَ انْتِقام۔

There is no eminence in one who has a bad character.
لا سُؤْدَدَ لِسَيِّءِ الخُلْقِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
He who does not support [and provide for] his brothers does not gain eminence.
لا يَسُودُ مَنْ لايَحْتَمِلُ إخْوانَهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
There is no eminence in the one who lacks generosity.
لاسِيادَةَ لِمَنْ لاسَخاءَ لَهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Eminence is not perfected except by bearing the burdens [of others] and doing good turns.
لايَكْمُلُ السُّؤْدَدُ إلاّ بِتَحَمُّلِ الأثْقالِ وَ إسْداءِ الصَّنايِعِ۔
