Rolling up one’s clothes [in preparation] for serious work is from [one’s] good fortune.
التَّشَمُرُّ لِلْجِدِّ مِنْ سَعادَةِ الجَدِّ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Seek and you shall find.
أُطْلُبْ تَجِدْ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
It is upon you to strive but it is not upon you to succeed.
عَلَيْكَ بِالسَّعِي ولَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ بِالنُّجْحِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Never will your striving for that which improves you and earns divine reward be wasted.
لَنْ يَضيعَ مِنْ سَعْيِكَ ما أصْلَحَكَ وأكْسَبَكَ الأجْرَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who hastens his pace arrives at the place of rest [and repose].
مَنْ أسْرَعَ المَسيرَ أدْرَكَ المَقيلَ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One whose efforts are good, his place in the Hereafter will be good.
مَنْ حَسُنَتْ مَساعيهِ طابَتْ مَراعيهِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Strive to free your necks [from the shackles of this world] before the doors of ransom are shut.
اِسْعَوْا في فِكاكِ رِقابِكُمْ قَبْلَ أنْ تُغْلَقَ رَهائِنُها۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Whoever hastens to the people with that which they dislike, they will speak about him that which...
مَنْ أسْرَعَ إلَى النّاسِ بِما يَكْرَهُونَ قالُوا فيهِ ما لايَعْلَمُونَ۔

Many a person strives in that which is harmful for him.
رُبَّ ساع فيما يَضُرُّهُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Many a person is awake so that another can sleep.
رُبَّ ساهِر لِراقِد۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Many a person strives for one who is seated [doing nothing].
رُبَّ ساع لِقاعِد۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
