Extravagance

Extravagance is blameworthy in everything except in doing good deeds. اَلإسْرافُ مَذْمُومٌ في كُلِّ شَيْء إلاّ في أفْعالِ الخَيْرِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Verily giving this wealth where it has no right to be given is wastefulness and extravagance. ألا وإنَّ إعْطاءَ هذا المالِ في غَيرِ حَقِّهِ تَبْذيرٌ وإسْرافٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The ugliest [form of] giving is extravagance. أقْبَحُ البَذْلِ السَّرَفُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The refusal of the economizer is better than the granting of the extravagant. إنَّ مَنْعَ المُقْتَصِدِ أحْسَنُ مِنْ عَطاءِ المُبَذِّرِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Verily the withholding of preserver is more graceful than the giving of the squanderer. إنَّ إمْساكَ الحافِظِ أجْمَلُ مِنْ بَذلِ المُضَيِّعِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Extravagance wipes out the plentiful. اَلإسْرافُ يُفْنِى الجَزيلَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Extravagance depletes the abundant. اَلإسْرافُ يُفْنِي الكَثيرَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Wastefulness is the symbol [and cause] of poverty. اَلتَّبْذيرُ عُنْوانُ الفاقَةِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Wastefulness is a penniless companion. اَلتَّبْذيرُ قَرينٌ مُفْلِسٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Abandon extravagance by economizing, and recall [your] tomorrow today. ذَرِ الإسْرافَ مُقْتَصِداً، واذْكُرْ فِي اليَوْمِ غَداً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Eschew extravagance, for neither is the generosity of the extravagant praised nor is his indigence... ذَرِ السَّرََفَ فَإنَّ المُسْرِفَ لا يُحْمَدُ جُودُهُ، ولا يُرْحَمُ فَقْرُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The cause of poverty is extravagance. سَبَبُ الفَقْرِ الإسْرافُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم You must abandon wastefulness and extravagance, and adopt the qualities of justice and equity. عَلَيْكَ بِتَرْكِ التَّبْذيرِ وَالإسْرافِ وَالتَّخَلُّقِ بِالعَدْلِ والإنْصافِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Extravagance is censured in everything except in performance of virtuous acts and excessiveness in... في كُلِّ شَيْء يُذَمُّ السَّرَفُ إلاّ في صَنايِعِ المَعْرُوُفِ والمُبالَغَةُ فيِ الطَّاعَةِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Then shun extravagance by economizing, and recall today [what you will need] tomorrow; hold on to... فَدَعِ الإسْرافَ مُقْتَصِداً، واذْكُرْ فِي اليَوْمِ غَداً، وأمْسِكْ مِنَ المالِ بِقَدْرِ ضَرُورَتِكَ، وَقَدِّمِ الفَضْلَ لِيَوْمِ... —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Wastefulness is enough of an extravagance. كَفى بِالتَّبْذيرِ سَرَفاً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Too much extravagance destroys. كَثْرَةُ السَّرَفِ تُدَمِّرُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم There is no honour in extravagance. لَيْسَ في سَرَف شَرَفٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who takes pride in wastefulness will be humiliated by indigence. مَنِ افْتَخَرَ بِالتَّبْذيرِ اِحْتَقَرَ بِالإفْلاسِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم That which is above sufficiency is extravagance. ما فَوْقَ الكَفافِ إسْرافٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم There is no ignorance like wastefulness. لاجَهْلَ كَالتَّبْذيرِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم There is no affluence with extravagance. لا غِنى مَعَ إسْراف۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Woe be to the extravagant! How far he is from reforming himself and setting right his affair! وَيْحَ المُسْرِفِ، ما أبْعَدَهُ عَنْ صَلاحِ نَفْسِهِ وَاِسْتِدْراكِ أمْرِهِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
