Showing Off

The outside of the one who shows off is beautiful but his inside is sickly. المُرائي ظاهِرُهُ جَميلٌ، وَباطِنُهُ عَلِيلٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Work without seeking to show off or for the sake of renown, for indeed the one who works for other... اِعْمَلُوا في غَيْرِ رِياء ولا سُمْعَة، فَإنَّهُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ لِغَيرِ اللّهِ يَكِلْهُ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ إلى مَنْ عَمِلَ لَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Showing off is [a form of] ascribing partners [to Allah]. اَلرِّياءُ إشْراكٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The bane of worship is showing off. آفَةُ العِبادَةِ الرِّياءُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The smallest amount of showing off is polytheism. يَسيرُ الرِّياءِ شِرْكٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The words of the one who shows off are beautiful, but in his heart there is an internal disease. لِسانُ المُرائي جَميلٌ، وفي قَلْبِهِ الدَّاءُ الدَّخيلُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
