The Greedy

The one who is greedy is poor, even if he owns the whole world in its entirety. اَلْحَريصُ فَقِيْرٌ، ولَوْ مَلَكَ الدُّنيا بِحَذافيرِها۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The greedy one is [always] weary. اَلْحَريصُ تَعِبٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The greedy one is never satisfied. اَلْحَريصُ لايَكْتَفي۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The greedy person is a slave to [his] desires. اَلْحَريصُ عَبْدُ المَطامِعِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The greedy person toils for that which will harm him. اَلْحَريصُ مَتْعُوبٌ فيما يَضُرُّهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The glutton is never satisfied. اَلشَّرِهُ لايَرْضى۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The greedy one is a prisoner of disgrace, never to be freed from his prison. اَلْحَريصُ أسيرُ مَهانَة لايُفَكُّ أسْرُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم If you are greedy in your desire for that which has been guaranteed to you (i.e. your sustenance)... إنْ كُنْتَ حَريصاً عَلى طَلَبِ المَضْمُونِ لَكَ فَكُنْ حَريصاً عَلى أداءِ المَفْرُوضِ عَلَيْكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Many a greedy person has been killed by his greed. رُبَّ حَريص قَتَلَهُ حِرْصُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم I wonder at the one who knows that Allah has guaranteed sustenance and allotted it, and that his... عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ عَلِمَ أنَّ اللّهَ قَدْ ضَمِنَ الأرْزاقَ، وقَدَّرَها، وأنَّ سَعْيَهُ لايَزيدُهُ فيما قُدِّرَ لَهُ مِنْها، وهُوَ... —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Every greedy person is needy. كُلُّ حَريص فَقيرٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Many a greedy person has been frustrated and many a contented person has not been disappointed! كَمْ مِنْ حَريص خائِب ومُجْمِل لَمْ يَخِبْ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم There is no adequacy for a greedy person. لَيْسَ لِحَريص غَناءٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who acts greedily is not bereft of indignity. مَنْ كانَ حَريصاً لَمْ يَعْدِمِ الإهانَةَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose greed increases, his wretchedness [also] increases. مَنْ كَثُرَ حِرْصُهُ كَثُرَ شَقائُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One for whom greed of worldly possessions is coupled with stinginess has held fast to the two... مَنْ جُمِعَ لَهُ مَعَ الحِرْصِ عَلَى الدُّنيا البُخْلُ بِها فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِعَمُودَيِ اللُّؤْمِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم A greedy person has no shame. لاحَياءَ لِحَريص۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم A greedy person is never found relaxing. لايُلْفَى الحَريصُ مُسْتَريحاً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Nothing makes one amass wealth except greed, and the greedy is wretched and dispraised. لايَجْمَعُ المالَ إلاّ الحِرْصُ، وَالحَريصُ شَقِيٌّ مَذْمُومٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
