إذا رَأيْتَ رَبَّكَ يُتابِعُ عَلَيْكَ النِّعَمَ فَاحْذَرْهُ۔
When you see your Lord sending continuous blessings upon you, then be careful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious and mindful when they witness the continuous blessings and favors bestowed upon them by their Lord. The Arabic word (niʿam) "نِعَمَ" refers to blessings, favors, or bounties. It encompasses all the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation, both apparent and hidden.
The word (yutābiʿu) "يُتَابِعُ" in the Hadith means "sending continuously" or "following up with." It signifies the uninterrupted flow of blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) upon His servants. This continuous bestowal of blessings is a manifestation of Allah's mercy, love, and care for His creation.
To understand the significance of being cautious when witnessing these continuous blessings, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:83):
And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.
This verse highlights the tendency of human beings to become heedless and ungrateful when they are blessed with continuous favors from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a reminder for Muslims to be mindful and not fall into the trap of neglecting their gratitude and responsibilities when they are in a state of abundance.
Another verse that sheds light on the importance of being cautious in the face of continuous blessings is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:57):
And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded.
This verse illustrates how Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sends blessings in the form of rain to revive dead lands and bring forth abundant fruits. However, it is essential to note that these blessings are not eternal, and they can be taken away if people become ungrateful or fail to fulfill their obligations.
In light of these Quranic verses, the exegesis of the Hadith emphasizes the need for Muslims to be cautious and vigilant when they witness the continuous blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a reminder that these blessings are not to be taken for granted or used recklessly. Instead, they should be cherished, appreciated, and utilized in a manner that pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
When Muslims recognize the continuous blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), it should motivate them to increase their gratitude and devotion. They should strive to fulfill their obligations, such as performing acts of worship, helping those in need, and spreading goodness in society. By doing so, they can ensure that these blessings continue and multiply.
Conversely, if Muslims become heedless and ungrateful, neglecting their duties and responsibilities, they risk losing these blessings. They may fall into a state of spiritual decline and distance themselves from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded to be mindful of their actions and intentions. They should constantly evaluate themselves and strive to improve their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By being cautious and grateful for the continuous blessings, they can maintain a strong connection with their Lord and ensure a prosperous and fulfilling life in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and appreciate His continuous blessings and guide us to use them in a manner that pleases Him. Ameen.
