اَلسَّخاءُ أشْرَفُ عادَة۔
Generosity is the most honourable habit.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Generosity is the most honourable habit.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the virtue and nobility of generosity. To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.
The word (سَخَاءُ) "sakhā" in Arabic refers to generosity, liberality, and magnanimity. It encompasses the act of giving freely, without hesitation or reluctance, and with a sincere intention to benefit others. It is a quality that reflects the abundance of goodness and kindness in a person's heart.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes generosity as (أشْرَفُ) "ashraf", meaning the most honorable or noble. This indicates that generosity is not merely a commendable trait, but rather the pinnacle of virtuous behavior. It is an attribute that elevates one's character and brings them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The importance of generosity is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense reward and blessings that come with acts of generosity. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously can lead to abundant blessings and multiplied rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a means of purifying one's wealth and increasing it manifold.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's assistance and sustenance in all aspects of our lives, including acts of generosity. When we give generously, we should do so with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure and relying on His provision.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate the habit of generosity in their lives. By being generous, we not only benefit others but also purify our own souls and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Generosity is not limited to material possessions; it also encompasses giving our time, knowledge, and compassion to those in need.
The consequences of practicing generosity are far-reaching. It fosters a sense of community, strengthens social bonds, and promotes a culture of empathy and compassion. Generosity has the power to transform societies by alleviating poverty, reducing inequality, and promoting justice. It is a means of fulfilling the rights of others and upholding the principles of social justice that Islam advocates.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the exemplary generosity of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions. Their selflessness and willingness to give without expecting anything in return serve as timeless examples for us to follow.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of generosity as the most honorable habit. It encourages Muslims to embody this virtue in their lives, drawing inspiration from the Quranic teachings and the noble examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions. By practicing generosity, we not only benefit others but also purify our own hearts and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be generous and make it a defining characteristic of our lives.
