إذا أكْرَمَ اللّهُ عَبْداً شَغَلَهُ بِمَحَبَّتِهِ۔
When Allah honours a servant, He occupies him with His love.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Servants)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When Allah honours a servant, He occupies him with His love.
This impactful saying highlights the immense blessing and honor bestowed upon a servant by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) when He bestows His love upon them.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their significance. The word (akrama) "أكْرَمَ" means to honor, bestow favor, or elevate in rank. When Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) honors a servant, it signifies that He has chosen them for a special status and has elevated them in His sight. The word (shaghalahu) "شَغَلَهُ" means to occupy or engage. In this context, it refers to Allah's love captivating and engrossing the heart and mind of the servant, leaving no room for anything else.
To understand the significance of Allah's love occupying a servant, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:165),
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.
This verse emphasizes the importance of directing our love solely towards Allah. When Allah honors a servant and occupies them with His love, it means that their heart is filled with an intense love for Him, surpassing any other worldly attachment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him.
This verse highlights that Allah's love for a servant is reciprocal. When Allah bestows His love upon a servant, it is a sign of His acceptance and pleasure with them. This love becomes a source of motivation and inspiration for the servant to strive even harder in their devotion and obedience to Allah.
When a servant is occupied with Allah's love, it has profound consequences on their life. Firstly, it brings about a sense of contentment and tranquility in their heart. They find solace in knowing that they are beloved to Allah and that He is always watching over them. This love becomes a shield against the trials and tribulations of the world, as they find comfort in the knowledge that Allah's love is sufficient for them.
Secondly, being occupied with Allah's love leads to a transformation in the servant's character and actions. They become more conscious of their deeds, striving to please Allah in every aspect of their life. Their love for Allah becomes the driving force behind their actions, guiding them towards righteousness and piety. They become more inclined towards acts of worship, seeking nearness to Allah through prayer, fasting, charity, and other virtuous deeds.
Moreover, being occupied with Allah's love also has a profound impact on the servant's relationships with others. Their love for Allah extends to love for His creation. They treat others with kindness, compassion, and justice, embodying the teachings of Islam. Their interactions are guided by the principles of mercy and forgiveness, reflecting the attributes of Allah Himself.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when Allah honors a servant, He occupies them with His love. This love transforms the servant's heart, leading to contentment, righteousness, and a deep sense of connection with Allah. It becomes a guiding light in their life, motivating them to strive for excellence in their worship and conduct. May Allah bless us all with His love and enable us to be among those who are occupied with His love.
