إنَّكُمْ أغْبَطُ بِما بَذَلْتُمْ مِنَ الرَّاغِبِ إلَيْكُمْ فيما وَصَلَهُ مِنْكُمْ۔
Verily you will gain more joy by [the reward of] what you have given than the one who seeks from you gains in what he has received from you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Begging And Asking People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily you will gain more joy by [the reward of] what you have given than the one who seeks from you gains in what he has received from you.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense spiritual and emotional satisfaction that comes from giving and selflessness.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to better understand its meaning. The word (aghbatu) "أغْبَطُ" refers to a state of greater joy, contentment, and satisfaction. It signifies a deep sense of fulfillment that surpasses any material gain. The word (bathaltum) "بَذَلْتُمْ" means to give or expend something willingly and generously. It emphasizes the act of selflessly offering something to others without expecting anything in return. The word (ar-raghibi) "الرَّاغِبِ" refers to the one who seeks or desires something from others. And finally, the word (wasalahu) "وَصَلَهُ" means to receive or obtain something from someone.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse beautifully illustrates the concept of giving and the abundant rewards that come with it. Just as a single seed multiplies into a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously multiplies the blessings and joy in one's life.
Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's support and guidance in our actions. When we give selflessly, we are seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and relying on His support. This reliance on Allah's assistance brings about a sense of tranquility and joy that cannot be attained through material gain.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of giving and selflessness over personal gain. It encourages us to find joy and contentment in the act of giving, knowing that the rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) are far greater than anything we may receive in return. This Hadith teaches us that true happiness lies in the selfless service of others, as it brings us closer to Allah and strengthens our connection with Him.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of intention in our actions. When we give with a pure and sincere intention, seeking only the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), our acts of generosity become a means of spiritual elevation and personal growth. We should strive to emulate Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in his selflessness and willingness to give without expecting anything in return.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of giving and selflessness. It teaches us that true joy and contentment are found in the act of giving, and that the rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for our selfless deeds are far greater than any material gain. Let us strive to embody the spirit of selflessness and generosity, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all our actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to give selflessly and experience the true joy that comes from serving others.
