لِلْكَيِّسِ في كُلِّ شَيْء إتِّعاظٌ۔
For the sagacious person there is admonition in everything.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Sagacious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
For the sagacious person there is admonition in everything.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of wisdom and insight in understanding the lessons that can be derived from every aspect of life.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (kayyis) "كَيِّسِ" refers to a person who possesses sagacity, intelligence, and wisdom. Such an individual has the ability to perceive and comprehend the underlying lessons and messages in various situations.
The word (ittia'atun) "إتِّعاظٌ" is derived from the root word (aata) "عَاطَى", which means to give attention, to take heed, or to be admonished. It implies that the sagacious person is able to extract valuable lessons and guidance from every experience, whether it be positive or negative.
The Quran provides numerous examples that support the concept of finding admonition in everything. In Surah Al-An'am, verse 59, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (6:59)
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
This verse highlights the comprehensive knowledge and awareness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over every aspect of creation. It serves as a reminder that even the smallest occurrences in the world are not insignificant in the eyes of Allah. Similarly, the sagacious person recognizes that there is wisdom and admonition to be found in every event, no matter how trivial it may seem.
Another verse that supports this concept is found in Surah Al-Jathiyah, verse 13: (45:13)
And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.
This verse emphasizes the signs and lessons that can be derived from the natural phenomena that surround us. The sagacious person contemplates the order and harmony of the universe, recognizing the signs of Allah's existence and wisdom. They understand that these signs serve as a constant reminder and source of admonition.
In light of this Hadith, we can understand that the sagacious person is not only observant of the external world, but also introspective in their own lives. They reflect upon their actions, experiences, and relationships, seeking to learn and grow from every situation. They understand that even in moments of hardship or difficulty, there are valuable lessons to be learned and opportunities for personal development.
The sagacious person's ability to find admonition in everything is not limited to specific circumstances or areas of life. It encompasses all aspects, including personal relationships, professional endeavors, and spiritual growth. They are constantly seeking knowledge and wisdom, recognizing that every encounter and experience has the potential to provide valuable insights and guidance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of wisdom and insight in our lives. By being sagacious, we can extract valuable lessons and guidance from every aspect of life. This requires us to be observant, reflective, and open to learning from both positive and negative experiences. May Allah grant us the ability to be sagacious individuals who constantly seek admonition and grow in wisdom.
