كُنْ فِي الفِتْنَةِ كَابْنِ اللَّبُونِ، لاضَرْعَ فَيُحْلَبَ ولاظَهْرَ فَيُرْكَبَ۔
In times of unrest, be like an adolescent camel that has neither udders for milking nor a back strong enough for riding.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Unrest)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) that we are examining states,
In times of unrest, be like an adolescent camel that has neither udders for milking nor a back strong enough for riding.
This analogy used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carries profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims, especially during times of trials and tribulations.
Let us first delve into the important words of this Hadith. The term (fitnah) "فِتْنَةِ" refers to a period of turmoil, unrest, or tribulation. It can encompass various forms of challenges, such as social, political, or religious upheavals. The word (kabn al-labun) "كَابْنِ اللَّبُونِ" is translated as an adolescent camel. This specific stage of a camel's life is characterized by its inability to provide milk and its lack of strength to be ridden.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient
This verse highlights that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life, and it is the response of the believers that matters.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) analogy of the adolescent camel teaches us two important lessons. Firstly, it emphasizes the importance of self-restraint and patience during times of fitnah. Just as the adolescent camel does not possess the ability to provide milk or carry a burden, Muslims should refrain from engaging in actions that may exacerbate the unrest or contribute to further chaos. This includes avoiding spreading rumors, engaging in violence, or participating in divisive activities.
Secondly, the analogy highlights the need for humility and self-awareness. The adolescent camel is aware of its limitations and does not attempt to exceed them. Similarly, Muslims should recognize their own limitations and not overstep their boundaries during times of unrest. This means acknowledging that not everyone possesses the knowledge or expertise to resolve complex issues, and instead, seeking guidance from qualified scholars and leaders.
Furthermore, this Hadith encourages Muslims to adopt a balanced approach in dealing with fitnah. Just as the adolescent camel is neither completely useless nor burdened with responsibilities, Muslims should strive to contribute positively within their capabilities. This can be done through acts of kindness, supporting those in need, and promoting unity and harmony within the community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims during times of unrest. It urges us to exercise self-restraint, patience, humility, and self-awareness. By adopting the characteristics of the adolescent camel, we can navigate through challenging times with wisdom and grace, contributing positively to the betterment of our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and face the trials of life with steadfastness.
