(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الظلم يوجب النار" which translates to

Injustice causes one to enter hellfire.

In order to understand the connotation behind this statement, let us delve into the words used in this Hadith.

The word (zulm) "ظلم" refers to injustice, oppression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that violates the rights of others, whether it be through physical harm, verbal abuse, or the denial of basic human rights. Zulm is a grave sin in Islam, as it goes against the principles of justice and fairness that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has ordained for humanity.

The word (yujib) "يوجب" means to necessitate or to cause. It implies that the consequence of committing injustice is the entry into the hellfire. This highlights the severity and gravity of engaging in acts of injustice. It serves as a warning to Muslims about the dire consequences that await those who oppress and wrong others.

To further emphasize the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of justice in Islam. Muslims are commanded to stand firm for justice, even if it goes against their personal inclinations or the interests of a particular group. It is a reminder that justice should be upheld at all times, regardless of the circumstances.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice even when it goes against one's own interests or the interests of loved ones. It reminds Muslims that justice should not be compromised, regardless of the relationships or circumstances involved. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our actions and intentions, and He will hold us accountable for our choices.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can understand that injustice is a grave sin that leads one towards the hellfire. Engaging in acts of oppression and wrongdoing not only harms others but also distances us from the path of righteousness and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

As Muslims, it is our duty to strive for justice in all aspects of our lives. We must treat others with fairness, kindness, and respect, ensuring that we do not infringe upon their rights. By doing so, we not only fulfill our obligations as believers but also safeguard ourselves from the destructive consequences of injustice.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and righteous individuals, and protect us from the path of oppression and wrongdoing. May He grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold justice in all our actions and interactions. Ameen.
