مَنْ كَثُرَ ذِكْرُهُ اِسْتَنارَ لُبُّهُ۔
One whose remembrance [of Allah] increases, his mind becomes illuminated.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ كَثُرَ ذِكْرُهُ اِسْتَنارَ لُبُّهُ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose remembrance [of Allah] increases, his mind becomes illuminated.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "ذِكْرُهُ" refers to the remembrance of Allah, which encompasses various acts such as reciting His names, praising Him, and seeking His forgiveness. The word "اِسْتَنارَ" means to become illuminated or enlightened, and "لُبُّهُ" refers to the heart or mind.
To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45),
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
This verse emphasizes the significance of remembrance of Allah, stating that it is greater than prayer in preventing immoral behavior and wrongdoing. It highlights the transformative power of constantly remembering Allah, which leads to the purification of the heart and mind.
Furthermore, in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.
This verse highlights the tranquility and assurance that comes from the remembrance of Allah. When one's heart is filled with the remembrance of Allah, it becomes illuminated with peace, contentment, and clarity.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. When a person increases their remembrance of Allah, their mind becomes illuminated. This illumination refers to the enlightenment and clarity that comes from deepening one's connection with Allah. It is a spiritual transformation that brings about a heightened awareness of the divine presence and guidance in every aspect of life.
When we constantly remember Allah, our hearts and minds are purified from negative thoughts, doubts, and distractions. We become more conscious of our actions and intentions, striving to align them with the teachings of Islam. This increased remembrance leads to a heightened sense of purpose, direction, and wisdom in our lives.
Moreover, the illumination of the mind through remembrance of Allah enables us to navigate through the challenges and complexities of life with clarity and insight. It helps us make better decisions, as our thoughts and actions are guided by the light of divine knowledge and wisdom.
The consequences of this illumination are far-reaching. It impacts our relationships, as we become more compassionate, patient, and understanding towards others. It strengthens our faith, as we develop a deeper trust in Allah and His divine plan. It also enhances our spiritual growth, as we strive to increase our knowledge and understanding of Islam.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the transformative power of increasing our remembrance of Allah. By constantly remembering Him, our hearts and minds become illuminated with peace, clarity, and guidance. This illumination leads to a deeper connection with Allah, a heightened sense of purpose, and a greater understanding of His divine wisdom. May we all strive to increase our remembrance of Allah and experience the enlightenment it brings to our lives.
