تَنْزِلُ المَثُوبَةُ عَلى قَدْرِ المُصيبَةِ۔
Reward descends in proportion to the hardship [that one bears].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Reward descends in proportion to the hardship [that one bears].
This enlightening Hadith highlights the concept of divine justice and the correlation between the difficulties we face in life and the rewards we receive from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (tanzilu) "تَنْزِلُ" means "descends" or "comes down." It signifies that the reward from Allah is not only granted but also descends upon the individual. This emphasizes the direct connection between the hardship endured and the reward received.
The word (almathuba) "المَثُوبَةُ" refers to the reward or recompense. It encompasses the blessings, favors, and mercy bestowed upon a person by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as a result of their perseverance and patience in the face of difficulties.
The phrase (ala qadril musibah) "عَلَى قَدْرِ المُصيبَةِ" translates to
in proportion to the hardship.
It signifies that the magnitude of the reward is directly proportional to the severity of the hardship one endures. The greater the trial, the greater the reward.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
(Quran 2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, never burdens us with trials and tribulations that exceed our capacity to endure. He knows our strengths and weaknesses better than we do. Therefore, whatever difficulties we face, we can be assured that we have the ability to overcome them.
Moreover, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
(Quran 29:2)
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse highlights the inevitability of trials and tests in the life of a believer. It reminds us that faith is not merely a declaration but a journey that involves facing challenges and hardships. It is through these trials that our faith is tested and strengthened, and ultimately, our reward is determined.
Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that the reward we receive from Allah is directly proportional to the hardships we endure. This means that the more we persevere and remain steadfast in the face of difficulties, the greater our reward will be.
For example, imagine a person who faces financial hardship but remains patient and continues to trust in Allah's provision. They may experience moments of doubt and worry, but their unwavering faith and reliance on Allah's mercy will lead them to seek lawful means of sustenance and make sincere supplications. In this case, their reward will not only be financial stability but also the strengthening of their faith, the development of patience, and the deepening of their relationship with Allah.
Similarly, consider a person who faces emotional or physical pain, such as the loss of a loved one or a chronic illness. Despite their suffering, they turn to Allah in prayer and seek solace in His words. Their reward may manifest in the form of inner peace, increased empathy towards others, and the knowledge that their pain is not in vain but rather a means of purification and elevation in the sight of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the reward from Allah is not arbitrary but rather directly linked to the hardships we endure. It reminds us that every trial we face is an opportunity for growth, purification, and an increase in our reward. Therefore, as Muslims, let us embrace the challenges of life with patience, perseverance, and unwavering trust in Allah's wisdom and mercy. May Allah grant us the strength to bear our hardships and shower us with abundant rewards in this life and the hereafter.
