The blindest of people is one who is blind to our love and our excellence, and one who has hatred for us without any wrongdoing on our part towards him, except that we invited him to the truth while others invited him to temptation and [the pleasures of] this world, so they preferred it and displayed hatred towards us.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blindness And The Blind)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the blindness of those who fail to recognize the love and excellence of the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes them as the blindest of people, as they are unable to see the truth and the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt.

The word (blindness) "عَمَىٰ" in this Hadith refers to a spiritual blindness, a state of ignorance and heedlessness. It signifies a lack of insight and understanding regarding the true essence of Islam and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his family. This blindness prevents individuals from recognizing the love and excellence of the Ahl al-Bayt, which is a fundamental aspect of the Islamic faith.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that this blindness is manifested in those who harbor hatred towards the Ahl al-Bayt without any valid reason or wrongdoing on their part. The Ahl al-Bayt, including Imam Ali himself, consistently invited people towards the truth, guiding them towards the path of righteousness and the teachings of Islam. However, some individuals were enticed by the temptations of this worldly life and chose to follow those who invited them towards materialistic desires and worldly pleasures.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of recognizing and loving the Ahl al-Bayt in several verses. One such verse is found in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:33), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O people of the household, and purify you with a thorough purification.

This verse highlights the purity and excellence of the Ahl al-Bayt, and Allah's desire to protect them from any impurities. It is a clear indication of the significance of recognizing and loving the Ahl al-Bayt, as they are chosen by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for their exceptional qualities and their role in preserving and propagating the true teachings of Islam.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Shura (42:23), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'I do not ask you for any payment for this [message], except that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way.'

This verse emphasizes the selflessness of the Ahl al-Bayt, who invite people towards the truth without seeking any worldly gains or personal benefits. They guide people towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the path of righteousness solely for the sake of pleasing Him and seeking His pleasure. Therefore, those who reject their invitation and choose the temptations of this world over the truth are indeed blind to the love and excellence of the Ahl al-Bayt.

The consequences of this blindness are grave, as it leads individuals away from the true path of Islam and towards the path of deviation and misguidance. By rejecting the invitation of the Ahl al-Bayt and displaying hatred towards them, individuals not only distance themselves from the blessings and guidance they offer, but also risk falling into the traps of worldly temptations and desires.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of recognizing and loving the Ahl al-Bayt. Their love and excellence are integral to our faith and serve as a guiding light in our journey towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We must strive to remove the blindness from our hearts and embrace the teachings and guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, for they are the true inheritors of the Prophet Muhammad () and the custodians of his knowledge and wisdom.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and love the Ahl al-Bayt, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness and truth. Ameen.
