مَجالِسُ اللَّهْوِ تُفْسِدُ الإيمانَ۔
Gatherings of amusement corrupt the faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Amusement)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَجالِسُ اللَّهْوِ تُفْسِدُ الإيمانَ۔
This can be translated as,
Gatherings of amusement corrupt the faith.
In order to understand the depth and significance of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
Firstly, the word (majalis) "مَجالِسُ" refers to gatherings or assemblies where people come together for various purposes. These gatherings can be social, educational, or even religious in nature. Secondly, (lahw) "اللَّهْوِ" refers to amusement, entertainment, or idle talk that diverts one's attention from serious matters. Lastly, (tufsidu) "تُفْسِدُ" means to corrupt, spoil, or undermine.
To shed light on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of utilizing our time and energy in a purposeful manner. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), Allah says,
Successful indeed are the believers, those who offer their prayers with humility and attentiveness.
This verse highlights the significance of focusing our attention on acts of worship and spiritual growth, rather than engaging in idle pursuits.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:9), Allah states,
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
This verse emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the remembrance of Allah over worldly affairs, even during the time of congregational prayer.
Imam Ali's statement aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. He warns us that gatherings of amusement, where idle talk and frivolous activities dominate, have the potential to corrupt our faith. Such gatherings divert our attention from the remembrance of Allah and hinder our spiritual growth. They can lead to a neglect of our religious obligations and a weakening of our connection with Allah.
Let us reflect on the consequences of engaging in gatherings of amusement. When we spend our time in idle talk and frivolous activities, we are neglecting the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of knowledge. This can lead to a decline in our faith, as we become disconnected from the source of spiritual nourishment. Our hearts become hardened, and we may find it difficult to maintain a sincere and meaningful relationship with Allah.
On the other hand, when we prioritize gatherings that are conducive to spiritual growth, such as gatherings of knowledge, remembrance of Allah, and righteous company, our faith is strengthened. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:2), Allah says,
Indeed, the believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith.
By immersing ourselves in gatherings that promote the remembrance of Allah and the acquisition of knowledge, we nourish our souls and deepen our faith.
Imam Ali's thought-provoking saying serves as a reminder for us to be mindful of the gatherings we choose to participate in. We should strive to seek out gatherings that are beneficial for our faith, where the remembrance of Allah is prioritized and knowledge is shared. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the corrupting influence of gatherings of amusement and ensure the preservation and growth of our faith.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's Hadith reminds us of the importance of being selective in the gatherings we engage in. We should prioritize gatherings that promote the remembrance of Allah, the acquisition of knowledge, and the strengthening of our faith. By doing so, we safeguard ourselves from the corrupting influence of gatherings of amusement and ensure the preservation and growth of our faith. May Allah guide us to choose wisely and grant us the strength to prioritize our spiritual growth in all aspects of our lives.
