إنَّ فِي الحِرْصِ لَعَناءً۔
Verily in greed there is suffering.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Greed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily in greed there is suffering.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (hirṣ) "حِرْصِ" in Arabic, which is translated as "greed" in English, refers to an intense desire or craving for worldly possessions, wealth, or power. It is a state of excessive attachment to material possessions and an insatiable longing for more. Greed can manifest in various forms, such as the desire for wealth, fame, or control over others.
The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of moderation and contentment, warning against the destructive nature of greed. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And We have certainly created man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
This verse reminds us of our humble origins and the transient nature of worldly possessions. It encourages us to focus on the spiritual development of our souls rather than being consumed by material desires.
Greed leads to various negative consequences, both on an individual and societal level. It breeds discontentment, envy, and selfishness, which can damage relationships and create a sense of dissatisfaction. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
And [also for] those who were settled in the Home (i.e., the city of Medina) and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
This verse highlights the importance of selflessness and generosity, which are virtues that counteract the negative effects of greed.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the inherent suffering that accompanies greed. Greed blinds us to the blessings we already possess and creates an insatiable desire for more, leading to perpetual dissatisfaction. It distracts us from the true purpose of our existence, which is to seek nearness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attain spiritual growth.
Reflecting on the consequences of greed, we realize that it not only harms our own souls but also has wider implications for society. It perpetuates inequality, as those driven by greed hoard wealth and resources, depriving others of their basic needs. In Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:26), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
This verse highlights the spiritual corruption that greed brings upon individuals, leading to a hardening of the heart and a loss of compassion for others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant against the destructive nature of greed. It urges us to cultivate contentment, gratitude, and selflessness, aligning our desires with the teachings of the Quran. By recognizing the suffering inherent in greed, we can strive to overcome it and seek a balanced and fulfilling life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the pitfalls of greed.
