Hadith #2714

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The boundary of wisdom is turning away from the perishing abode [of this world] and being infatuated with the Eternal Abode [of the Hereafter].

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the essence of true wisdom and the proper perspective that a believer should have towards this worldly life and the Hereafter.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (hikmah) "حِكْمَةِ" refers to wisdom, which encompasses knowledge, understanding, and the ability to apply knowledge in the best possible manner. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both intellectual and moral aspects. The word (i'rad) "إعْراضُ" means turning away or distancing oneself from something. The word (dar) "دارِ" means abode or dwelling, and it refers to the transient nature of this worldly life. On the other hand, the word (al-baqa') "البَقاءِ" refers to the Eternal Abode, which is the Hereafter, where believers will reside forever.

To further elucidate the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 201:

And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, grant us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter. It reminds us that true wisdom lies in recognizing the temporary nature of this worldly life and striving for eternal success in the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and pleasures, urging us to reflect upon the true value of the Hereafter, which is everlasting and far superior.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal abode over the transient world. It calls upon us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits and distractions of this life and instead focus on the Hereafter, which holds everlasting rewards and eternal bliss.

By turning away from the perishing abode of this world, we are not advocating for a complete abandonment of worldly responsibilities and obligations. Rather, it is about maintaining a balanced perspective and not becoming overly attached to the temporary pleasures and possessions of this life. It is about recognizing that true success lies in preparing for the eternal life to come.

This Hadith encourages us to reflect upon our motivations and actions. It reminds us that our choices in this world have consequences in the Hereafter. By prioritizing the Hereafter, we are motivated to engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and strive for moral excellence. It instills in us a sense of purpose and direction, guiding us towards actions that will bring us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and ensure our success in the eternal abode.
