أكْرَمُ الحَسَبِ الخُلْقُ۔
The most honourable distinction is [good] character.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أكْرَمُ الحَسَبِ الخُلْقُ۔" This beautiful saying emphasizes the significance and superiority of good character. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the words used in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
The word (akramu) "أكْرَمُ" is derived from the root word (karama) "كَرَمَ", which means honor, nobility, and generosity. It signifies the highest level of excellence and distinction. In this context, it refers to the most honorable and noble attribute one can possess.
The term (al-hasab) "الحَسَبِ" is derived from the root word (hasaba) "حَسَبَ", which means character, conduct, or disposition. It encompasses one's moral qualities, behavior, and how they interact with others. It reflects the inner state of a person and their ethical values.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asserts that good character is the most honorable distinction one can possess. This statement aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and moral conduct.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4),
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse was revealed in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), highlighting his impeccable character and serving as a testament to the significance of good conduct.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true nobility and honor lie in righteousness and piety. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly status. The most honorable among us are those who possess the best character and conduct themselves in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Good character manifests in various ways, such as honesty, kindness, patience, forgiveness, and compassion. It is reflected in how we treat others, how we speak, and how we handle challenging situations. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself exemplified the epitome of good character, and his noble companions followed in his footsteps.
Having good character not only brings honor and respect in this world but also has profound consequences in the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
This verse reminds us that the ultimate reward and honor await those who possess good character and strive to do righteous deeds. It is through their noble conduct that they attain success and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that good character is the most honorable distinction one can possess. It surpasses any material wealth, social status, or external appearance. It is a reflection of our inner selves and a means to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to strive for excellence in our character and conduct. We should emulate the noble examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his profound knowledge and impeccable character.
By embodying good character, we not only bring honor to ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society. Our interactions with others should be characterized by kindness, empathy, and respect. Through our actions, we can inspire others to follow the path of righteousness and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate world.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain good character, and may He bless us with the honor and distinction that comes from embodying the teachings of Islam.
