اَلْغَنِيُّ مَنْ آثَرَ القَناعَةَ۔
A [truly] rich person is one who prefers contentment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الْغَنِيُّ مَنْ آثَرَ القَناعَةَ
which translates to
A [truly] rich person is one who prefers contentment.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the true essence of wealth and richness, which lies not in material possessions but in the state of contentment and satisfaction with what one has.
To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us explore the key words used. The word (al-ghaniyyu) "الْغَنِيُّ" refers to someone who is rich or wealthy. However, in this context, it signifies true richness, which goes beyond mere material wealth. It encompasses spiritual richness, inner peace, and contentment. The word (aathara) "آثَرَ" means to prefer or prioritize. It implies making a conscious choice to prioritize contentment over the pursuit of material possessions. Finally, (al-qana'ah) "القَناعَةَ" refers to contentment, being satisfied with what one has, and not constantly desiring more.
The Quran provides us with several verses that support and reinforce the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse reminds us that true provision and richness lie in piety and God-consciousness, not in accumulating material possessions. It is through contentment and gratitude that we attain spiritual richness and peace.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and relying on Him for our needs. It emphasizes the need for contentment and trust in Allah's provision, rather than constantly striving for more worldly possessions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages us to reflect on our priorities and the true meaning of wealth. It reminds us that contentment is a virtue that leads to inner peace and tranquility. When we prioritize contentment over the pursuit of material possessions, we free ourselves from the constant desire for more and find satisfaction in what we already have.
Choosing contentment does not mean that we should not strive for a better life or work hard to improve our circumstances. Rather, it means that we should not let our pursuit of wealth and possessions consume us, to the point where we are never satisfied. It is about finding a balance between worldly aspirations and spiritual well-being.
By embodying the principle of contentment, we can experience the true richness of life. We learn to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us and find joy in the simplest of things. Contentment allows us to live a life free from the shackles of materialism and greed, enabling us to focus on our spiritual growth and the well-being of others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true richness lies in contentment. It encourages us to prioritize inner peace and spiritual well-being over the accumulation of material possessions. By embracing contentment, we can attain a state of true richness and experience the blessings of a fulfilled life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and apply this profound lesson in our lives.
