مِنْ عَلاماتِ العَقْلِ العَمَلُ بِسُنَّةِ العَدْلِ۔
Acting on the [established] practice of justice is from the signs of intelligence.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Acting on the [established] practice of justice is from the signs of intelligence.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of justice and highlights its correlation with intelligence. Let us delve deeper into the meaning and significance of this wise utterance in light of the Quran.
The word (signs) "عَلامَاتِ" in the Hadith refers to indications or characteristics that are visible or recognizable. It implies that acting upon justice is not only a virtue but also a clear sign of intelligence. The word (intelligence) "العَقْلِ" refers to the ability to understand, comprehend, and make sound judgments. Therefore, this Hadith suggests that one who practices justice demonstrates wisdom and rationality.
The Quranic verses support the notion that justice is an essential quality of an intelligent and righteous individual. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against one's personal interests or the interests of loved ones. It highlights the need to be just and unbiased in our actions and decisions. By doing so, we demonstrate our commitment to fairness and righteousness, which are qualities of an intelligent and discerning individual.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice. It encourages Muslims to intervene and mediate between conflicting parties, ensuring that justice is served. By doing so, we not only establish peace and harmony but also demonstrate our commitment to justice, which is a characteristic of an intelligent and wise individual.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound relationship between justice and intelligence. When one acts upon justice, they exhibit wisdom, rationality, and discernment. They prioritize fairness and righteousness over personal interests, demonstrating their commitment to upholding the principles of Islam.
Practicing justice has far-reaching consequences. It fosters a just society where individuals are treated equitably, regardless of their social status, wealth, or influence. It promotes harmony, unity, and mutual respect among Muslims. Moreover, acting upon justice strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood within the Muslim community, as it ensures that everyone is treated fairly and justly.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of incorporating justice into our daily lives. We should strive to be fair, unbiased, and equitable in our interactions, decisions, and judgments. By doing so, we not only demonstrate our intelligence but also fulfill our duty as Muslims to establish justice in society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to act upon justice and uphold the principles of Islam. May He guide us to be just and fair in all aspects of our lives. Ameen.
