شُكْرُ المُؤْمِنِ يَظْهَرُ في عَمَلِهِ۔
The gratitude of a believer is manifested in his action.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
شُكْرُ المُؤْمِنِ يَظْهَرُ في عَمَلِهِ۔
This can be translated as,
The gratitude of a believer is manifested in his action.
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of expressing gratitude through our deeds and actions.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (shukr) "شُكْرُ" refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It is derived from the Arabic root "ش-ك-ر" which means to acknowledge or recognize a favor. Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of faith and is highly regarded in Islam. It is a quality that reflects a believer's recognition of Allah's blessings and favors upon them.
The word (mu'min) "مُؤْمِنِ" refers to a believer, someone who has faith in Allah and His Messenger. A true believer is not only someone who believes in their heart but also someone whose faith is reflected in their actions. This highlights the importance of aligning our actions with our beliefs.
The word (yazharu) "يَظْهَرُ" means to manifest or become apparent. It signifies that gratitude is not merely a feeling or a thought, but it should be evident in our actions. A believer's gratitude should be visible to others through their behavior, conduct, and interactions with others.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and highlights the promise of Allah's increased blessings for those who express gratitude.
Additionally, in Surah An-Naml (27:40), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, 'I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.' And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, 'This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous.'
This verse highlights the story of Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his gratitude towards Allah. It emphasizes that gratitude is not only beneficial for the individual expressing it but also a means of acknowledging Allah's favors and blessings.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can understand that gratitude is not limited to mere words or thoughts. It is a quality that should be demonstrated through our actions. When we are grateful, we acknowledge Allah's blessings and favors upon us, and this recognition should be evident in the way we live our lives.
Gratitude should motivate us to perform acts of worship, to be kind and compassionate towards others, and to use our blessings in a way that benefits society. It should inspire us to be generous and to share our blessings with those in need. By manifesting gratitude in our actions, we not only fulfill our duty as believers but also inspire others to be grateful and appreciative.
Conversely, ingratitude and neglecting to express gratitude can lead to spiritual decline and distance from Allah's blessings. It is essential for us as Muslims to constantly reflect on our actions and ensure that they are aligned with our gratitude towards Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the gratitude of a believer is not confined to words or thoughts alone. It should be evident in our actions, serving as a testament to our recognition of Allah's blessings upon us. Let us strive to manifest gratitude in our daily lives, seeking to please Allah and benefit ourselves and others. May Allah grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He increase us in His blessings.
