Hadith #6577

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِعْدِلْ تَمْلِكَ۔" which translates to

Be just and you will rule.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect.

The word (i'dil) "اِعْدِلْ" is derived from the root word (adala) "عَدَلَ", which means to be just, fair, and equitable. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized throughout the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is the epitome of justice, and He commands us to uphold justice in all aspects of our lives.

The word (tamlik) "تَمْلِكَ" is derived from the root word (malaka) "مَلَكَ", which means to possess, own, or rule. It implies that by practicing justice, one attains the ability to rule or govern effectively. This does not necessarily refer to political power, but rather to the ability to lead and influence others in a just and righteous manner.

The exegesis of this Hadith can be further understood by examining relevant Quranic verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),

We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.

This verse highlights the importance of justice as a criterion for the success and progress of societies. It is through justice that people can establish a harmonious and balanced social order.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

This verse emphasizes the obligation of Muslims to uphold justice, even if it goes against their personal interests or the interests of their loved ones. It highlights the importance of impartiality and fairness in all aspects of life.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that justice is not only a moral duty but also a means to attain effective leadership and influence. When a leader governs with justice, they gain the respect and trust of their followers. This fosters a sense of unity, stability, and prosperity within the community. Conversely, a leader who lacks justice will face discontent, division, and ultimately, a loss of authority.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was renowned for his deep knowledge, wisdom, and commitment to justice. His exemplary leadership during his caliphate is a testament to the power of justice in governance. He resolved disputes with fairness, treated all individuals equally, and ensured the welfare of the people under his rule. His adherence to justice not only earned him the respect and loyalty of his companions but also inspired generations of Muslims to follow his noble example.

As Muslims, we are called upon to internalize the message of this Hadith and strive for justice in all aspects of our lives. Whether in our personal relationships, professional endeavors, or societal interactions, justice should be our guiding principle. By embodying justice, we not only fulfill our religious obligations but also contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold justice in all our affairs, and may He bless us with leaders who govern with justice and righteousness. Ameen.
