The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
التَّعاوُنُ عَلى إقامَةِ الحَقِّ أمانَةٌ ودِيانَةٌ۔
This can be translated as,
Assisting one another to establish the truth is [a sign of] trustworthiness and faith.
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this profound Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran. The key words in this Hadith are (ta'awun) "تَعَاوُن", (iqamah) "إقَامَة", (al-haqq) "الحَقِّ", (amanah) "أَمَانَة", and (diyanah) "دِيَانَة".
The word (ta'awun) "تَعَاوُن" refers to mutual cooperation and assistance. It emphasizes the importance of Muslims coming together and supporting one another in various aspects of life, particularly in upholding and establishing the truth. This cooperation is not limited to a specific realm but encompasses all aspects of life, including social, moral, and religious matters.
The term (iqamah) "إقَامَة" means to establish or uphold. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the establishment of the truth. It implies that Muslims should actively work towards establishing and promoting the truth in society, ensuring justice, and upholding the principles of Islam.
The word (al-haqq) "الحَقِّ" means truth. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of truth and commands Muslims to stand firmly for it. For example, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:20), Allah says,
O you who have believed, obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
This verse highlights the significance of adhering to the truth and not deviating from it.
The term (amanah) "أَمَانَة" means trustworthiness. It refers to fulfilling one's responsibilities and obligations faithfully. This trustworthiness is not only a social obligation but also a religious duty.
The word (diyanah) "دِيَانَة" means faith or religion. It encompasses the beliefs, practices, and values of a person. In this Hadith, it signifies that assisting one another in establishing the truth is not only a sign of trustworthiness but also an integral part of one's faith and religious commitment.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse emphasizes the importance of mutual cooperation among Muslims, but with the condition that it should be in matters of righteousness and piety. Assisting one another to establish the truth aligns perfectly with this Quranic command.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah says,
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the importance of advising one another towards the truth. It further reinforces the idea that assisting one another in upholding the truth is a fundamental aspect of faith.
The consequences of adhering to this Hadith are profound. When Muslims come together to establish the truth, they create a society based on justice, fairness, and righteousness. This unity and cooperation lead to the betterment of individuals and the community as a whole. It fosters an environment where trust is nurtured, and people can rely on one another to uphold the principles of Islam.
Moreover, by actively participating in the establishment of truth, Muslims become ambassadors of Islam. They exemplify the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, attracting others towards the beauty and truth of Islam. This Hadith encourages Muslims to be proactive in spreading the message of Islam through their actions and interactions with others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that it emphasizes the importance of unity and cooperation among Muslims.
