أشْرَفُ الغِنى تَرْكُ المُنى۔
The most honourable wealth is abandoning [false] aspirations.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أشْرَفُ الغِنى تَرْكُ المُنى۔
This can be translated as,
The most honourable wealth is abandoning [false] aspirations.
Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The word (ghina) "غِنى" refers to wealth or richness, but it also carries a deeper meaning of contentment and sufficiency. It encompasses both material and spiritual wealth. The word (tarak) "تَرْكُ" means to abandon or leave behind. And finally, (al-muna) "المُنى" refers to false aspirations or desires that distract us from the path of righteousness.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking contentment and sufficiency from Allah, rather than being consumed by worldly desires and aspirations.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.
This verse reminds us to strike a balance between our worldly pursuits and our ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter. It emphasizes the need to prioritize our spiritual growth over materialistic desires.
Now, let us delve deeper into the exegesis of the Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that the most honorable form of wealth is not the accumulation of material possessions, but rather the abandonment of false aspirations. This means that true richness lies in detaching ourselves from the pursuit of worldly desires that distract us from our spiritual journey.
When we constantly chase after material wealth, power, and fame, we become slaves to our desires. Our hearts become attached to the temporary pleasures of this world, and we lose sight of our purpose and the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. This attachment leads to restlessness, anxiety, and dissatisfaction, as our desires are insatiable and can never truly fulfill us.
On the other hand, when we abandon these false aspirations and redirect our focus towards seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we attain true contentment and inner peace. We realize that our ultimate goal is to please our Creator and attain His mercy and forgiveness. This shift in perspective allows us to prioritize our actions and intentions, seeking spiritual growth and righteousness above all else.
By abandoning false aspirations, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of worldly gains and instead focus on fulfilling our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings. We become more generous, compassionate, and selfless, as our wealth is no longer measured solely by material possessions, but by the impact we have on others and the good deeds we accumulate.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us a profound lesson about the true nature of wealth. It reminds us that the most honorable form of wealth is not found in the accumulation of material possessions, but rather in the abandonment of false aspirations that distract us from our spiritual journey. By prioritizing our relationship with Allah and seeking contentment in His pleasure, we attain true richness and inner peace. May Allah guide us all to abandon false aspirations and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
