لَوْ خَلَصَتِ النِّيّاتُ لَزَكَتِ الأعْمالُ۔
If the intentions became sincere, the actions would become pure.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
If the intentions became sincere, the actions would become pure.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of having sincere intentions in our actions. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (intentions) "niyyat" and (actions) "a'mal". The word "niyyat" refers to the inner motivation and purpose behind our actions. It is the driving force that determines the value and righteousness of our deeds. "A'mal," on the other hand, refers to the outward actions that we perform.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of intentions in our worship and deeds. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 98:5)
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion
This verse highlights the importance of sincerity in our worship, indicating that our intentions must be solely directed towards pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'arij, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 70:19-25)
Indeed, mankind was created anxious: When evil touches him, impatient, and when good touches him, withholding [of it], Except the observers of prayer - Those who are constant in their prayer And those within whose wealth is a known right For the petitioner and the deprived
This passage highlights the importance of performing acts of worship with sincerity and integrity, as it is the righteous who are constant in their prayers and fulfill their obligations towards others.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the purity of our actions is directly linked to the sincerity of our intentions. If our intentions are pure and solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), our actions will be righteous and pleasing to Him. Conversely, if our intentions are tainted with ulterior motives such as seeking praise or worldly gains, our actions will be corrupted and devoid of true righteousness.
For example, if a person performs acts of charity with the intention of gaining recognition and praise from others, their actions lose their purity and sincerity. On the other hand, if someone gives in charity solely to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and help those in need, their actions become pure and virtuous.
The consequences of having sincere intentions are profound. When our intentions are pure, our actions become a means of drawing closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attaining His pleasure. Our deeds become a reflection of our faith and devotion, and they have a transformative effect on our character and spirituality. Moreover, sincere intentions also protect us from the pitfalls of hypocrisy and insincerity, ensuring that our actions are consistent with our beliefs.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of constantly purifying our intentions and striving for sincerity in all aspects of our lives. We should seek to align our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can ensure that our actions are not only outwardly righteous but also inwardly pure, leading to the ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the success in the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our intentions and make our actions sincere. May He accept our efforts and guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
