لِكُلِّ شَيْء غايَةٌ وغايَةُ المَرْءِ عَقْلُهُ۔
Everything has a pinnacle, and the pinnacle of a person is his intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لِكُلِّ شَيْء غايَةٌ وغايَةُ المَرْءِ عَقْلُهُ۔
This profound saying emphasizes the importance of intellect in the life of a person. Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (ghayah) "غايَةٌ" in Arabic refers to the pinnacle, the ultimate goal, or the highest point of something. It represents the culmination or the ultimate purpose that something is meant to achieve. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that every entity or aspect of creation has a pinnacle, a purpose, and for a human being, that pinnacle is their intellect, represented by the word (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ".
The Quranic verses beautifully support the significance of intellect in the life of a Muslim. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect and reasoning abilities to understand His signs and guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 164, Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse highlights the role of intellect in recognizing the signs of Allah's creation and the need to ponder upon them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 21, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse illustrates the power of intellect by comparing it to a mountain. Even a mountain, a symbol of strength and stability, would crumble in awe of Allah's revelation. It signifies that human intellect, when utilized correctly, has the potential to comprehend and appreciate the greatness of Allah's message.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the superiority of intellect over other aspects of human existence. While physical strength, wealth, or worldly possessions may have their own value, the intellect surpasses them all. It is the intellect that enables a person to understand the purpose of their existence, to differentiate between right and wrong, and to make informed decisions.
The intellect is not limited to mere knowledge or information. It encompasses wisdom, rationality, and the ability to reflect upon one's actions and choices. It is through the intellect that a person can attain spiritual growth, develop moral values, and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also implies that the intellect should be nurtured and developed. It is not something that is fixed or stagnant but can be enhanced through continuous learning, critical thinking, and seeking knowledge. Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge from cradle to grave, as the Quran states in Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
The consequences of neglecting or misusing one's intellect are grave. Without utilizing our intellect, we may fall into ignorance, superstitions, and misguided beliefs. We may make decisions based on emotions or societal pressures rather than rational thinking. The Quran warns against such heedlessness in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 179,
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the pinnacle of a person's existence as their intellect. It highlights the importance of utilizing one's intellectual capabilities to understand the signs of Allah, make informed decisions, and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Muslims are encouraged to continuously develop their intellect through seeking knowledge, critical thinking, and reflection. Neglecting or misusing one's intellect can lead to ignorance and misguided beliefs. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to utilize our intellect in the best possible way.
