Hadith #2774

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The embellishment of leadership is bestowing favors.

This amazing Hadith highlights the true essence of leadership and the qualities that make a leader truly honorable and respected.

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (zeen) "زَيْنُ" means embellishment or adornment, while (ar-riyaasah) "الرِّياسَةِ" refers to leadership. The word (al-ifdaal) "الإفْضالُ" translates to bestowing favors or showing kindness. Thus, the Hadith emphasizes that the true beauty and excellence of leadership lies in the act of bestowing favors and showing kindness to others.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),

We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.

This verse highlights the importance of justice in leadership. A true leader must be just and fair in their dealings, ensuring that everyone is treated equitably.

Additionally, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against one's personal interests or relationships. A leader who bestows favors and shows kindness must do so with justice and impartiality, without favoring one group over another.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith reflects his profound understanding of leadership. He exemplified this quality throughout his life, as he was known for his wisdom, justice, and compassion. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) would often go above and beyond to help those in need, regardless of their social status or background.
