Hadith #6720

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما حُصِّنَتِ الأعْراضُ بِمِثْلِ البَذْلِ۔

This can be translated as,

Nothing safeguards reputations like spending generously.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (husinat) "حُصِّنَتِ" in this Hadith comes from the root word (hasana) "حَصَنَ", which means to protect, safeguard, or fortify. It implies the act of preserving something valuable and ensuring its safety. In this context, it refers to the safeguarding of reputations, which are a cherished aspect of a person's honor and dignity.

The word (al-a'radh) "الأعْراضُ" refers to reputations or honor. It encompasses the way others perceive and judge an individual based on their actions, character, and integrity. Reputation is a fragile and precious asset that can be easily tarnished or damaged. Therefore, it is crucial to protect and preserve it.

The word (bimithli) "بِمِثْلِ" means "like" or "similar to." It emphasizes the importance of a specific action in safeguarding reputations. In this Hadith, that action is (al-badl) "البَذْلِ", which means spending generously or giving in charity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of generosity and selflessness in preserving one's reputation.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse beautifully illustrates the concept of spending generously. Just as a single seed multiplies into a bountiful harvest, the act of giving in the way of Allah multiplies the rewards and blessings for the giver. By spending in charity, not only do we benefit those in need, but we also enhance our own reputation and earn the pleasure of Allah.

Another verse that aligns with the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80:

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining a firm and honorable reputation throughout our lives. By spending generously, we demonstrate our commitment to righteousness and establish a positive image in the eyes of others.
