Hadith #3235

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Good character is [an embellishment] for the soul and good appearance is [a beautification] for the body.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of both inner and outer beauty in the life of a Muslim.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" means "goodness" or "beauty." It refers to the quality of being morally upright, virtuous, and admirable. (al-khulq) "الخُلقِ" means "character" or "conduct," encompassing a person's manners, behavior, and disposition. (an-nafs) "النَّفْسِ" refers to the soul or the inner self. (al-khalq) "الخَلْقِ" refers to the physical appearance or the external form of a person.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77:

And seek, by means of what Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking the hereafter while also fulfilling our responsibilities in this world. It emphasizes the need to do good and maintain good character. Our character is not only a reflection of our inner selves but also a means to attain success in the hereafter.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 4:

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse is a testament to the exceptional character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in their conduct and emulate the noble qualities of the Prophet (ﷺ).

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The first part of the Hadith states,

Good character is [an embellishment] for the soul.

This implies that possessing good character is not only beneficial for oneself but also enhances the beauty and purity of the soul. Just as adornments enhance the appearance of a person, good character enhances the essence of the soul.

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

The second part of the Hadith states,

Good appearance is [a beautification] for the body.

This highlights the importance of presenting oneself in a dignified and respectable manner. Islam encourages Muslims to take care of their physical appearance, cleanliness, and grooming. This not only reflects self-respect but also represents the beauty and elegance of the faith.

When a Muslim maintains a neat and presentable appearance, they leave a positive impression on others. This can lead to increased respect, credibility, and influence in society.
