(Ghurar al-Hikam: The [Allotted] Share)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أوْفَرُ القِسْمِ صِحَّةُ الجِسْمِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of good health and declares it as the most abundant share or blessing that one can possess.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (awfar) "أوْفَرُ" means the most abundant or plentiful. It signifies that good health is a blessing that surpasses all others in terms of abundance and significance. The word (qism) "قِسْمِ" refers to a share or portion, indicating that good health is a portion or blessing that is distributed among individuals. Lastly, (sihhat) "صِحَّةُ" means good health, encompassing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

To further comprehend the significance of good health, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the importance of taking care of oneself and not engaging in actions that harm one's well-being. By maintaining good health, we are better equipped to fulfill our obligations and engage in acts of goodness.

Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the importance of physical health in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:6), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.

This verse highlights the significance of cleanliness and physical hygiene, which are essential for maintaining good health.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that good health is a precious blessing that should not be taken for granted. It is through good health that we are able to fulfill our duties towards Allah and serve our fellow Muslims. When we are in good health, we have the energy and strength to engage in acts of worship, such as performing prayers, fasting, and giving charity. Moreover, good health enables us to actively participate in society, contribute to the well-being of our families, and support those in need.

Conversely, when we neglect our health, we may become unable to fulfill our obligations and responsibilities. Poor health can hinder our ability to worship, impact our productivity, and limit our contributions to society. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to prioritize their health and take the necessary steps to maintain and improve it.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying serves as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. By taking care of our bodies, minds, and souls, we can lead fulfilling lives and fulfill our duties towards Allah and our fellow Muslims. Let us strive to maintain good health and utilize this abundant blessing to serve Allah and benefit humanity. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us all good health and enable us to make the most of this bountiful share.
