Hadith #5150

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The best honour is good etiquette.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in Islam. Let us delve deeper into the meaning and significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sharaf) "شَّرَفِ" in Arabic refers to honor, dignity, or nobility. It encompasses the elevated status and respect that an individual possesses. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that the highest form of honor is attained through good etiquette or adab.

Etiquette, or (adab) "أدَبُ", refers to the proper conduct, behavior, and manners that a person exhibits in their interactions with others. The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of good etiquette and its connection to honor and righteousness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that true honor and nobility are not determined by one's lineage, wealth, or social status, but rather by their righteousness and piety. A person who possesses good etiquette and conducts themselves with humility and kindness is considered noble in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another verse that emphasizes the importance of good etiquette is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53):

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and speak in the best manner possible. It reminds us that our speech should be characterized by kindness, respect, and sincerity. By practicing good etiquette in our speech, we can foster unity and harmony among ourselves and avoid falling into the traps of Satan.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. Good etiquette also serves as a means of inviting others to Islam, as our actions speak louder than words.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the highest standards of good etiquette. His interactions with people, whether friend or foe, were characterized by kindness, patience, and compassion. He treated everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or beliefs.
