ثَرْوَةُ الجاهِلِ في مالِهِ وَأمَلِهِ۔
The wealth of an ignorant person is in his worldly possessions and his hopes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The wealth of an ignorant person is in his worldly possessions and his hopes.
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this enlightening Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (tharwah) "ثَرْوَةُ" in Arabic refers to wealth or riches. It signifies material possessions, including money, property, and other worldly assets. The term (al-jahil) "الجاهِلِ" refers to an ignorant person, someone lacking knowledge and understanding. It is important to note that ignorance in this context does not simply refer to a lack of education, but rather a lack of spiritual insight and understanding of the true purpose of life.
When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the wealth of an ignorant person is in his worldly possessions and his hopes, he is highlighting the misguided priorities of such individuals. Their focus is solely on accumulating material wealth and fulfilling their desires without considering the consequences of their actions or the true purpose of their existence.
The Quran provides several verses that shed light on the dangers of materialism and the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Taghabun (64:9):
The Day when their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say, 'How we wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.' And they will say, 'Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.'
This verse emphasizes the regret that those who prioritize worldly possessions and follow the misguided advice of others will experience on the Day of Judgment. They will realize that their wealth and hopes were futile and that true success lies in obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the delusion of wealth and worldly possessions:
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse reminds us that material possessions and worldly desires are merely temporary adornments in this life. True success lies in performing righteous deeds that will benefit us in the hereafter and strengthen our hope in Allah's mercy.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize seeking knowledge and understanding over the accumulation of wealth. Knowledge is the key to unlocking spiritual enlightenment and guidance. It enables us to make informed decisions, avoid ignorance, and strive for a meaningful and purposeful life.
By focusing solely on material possessions and worldly desires, we risk losing sight of our ultimate goal, which is to seek the pleasure of Allah and attain success in the hereafter. We should strive to acquire knowledge, not only in worldly matters but also in matters of faith and spirituality. This knowledge will enable us to make wise choices, fulfill our responsibilities, and contribute positively to society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize seeking knowledge and understanding over the accumulation of wealth. It highlights the misguided priorities of those who solely focus on material possessions and worldly desires. By seeking knowledge and understanding, we can avoid ignorance, make informed decisions, and strive for a meaningful and purposeful life that is pleasing to Allah. May Allah guide us all on the path of knowledge and righteousness.
