حَقٌّ عَلَى العاقِلِ العَمَلُ لِلْمَعادِ، والاِسْتِكْثارُ مِنَ الزّادِ۔
It is a right that is due on the intelligent one to work for the Hereafter and to seek more provisions [for it].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the responsibilities of an intelligent individual towards the Hereafter and the importance of seeking provisions for it. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (due) "عَلَى" in the Hadith signifies an obligation or a right that must be fulfilled. It highlights the duty of a person possessing intellect to fulfill certain obligations. In this context, the intelligent one is obligated to engage in actions that are beneficial for the Hereafter. This implies that intelligence is not merely a tool for worldly success, but also a means to attain success in the eternal life.
The word (work) "عَمَلُ" refers to the actions and deeds that a person performs. It encompasses all forms of righteous acts, such as prayer, fasting, charity, and acts of kindness. The Hadith emphasizes that the intelligent person should prioritize and actively engage in such actions, as they are essential for attaining success in the Hereafter.
The word (Hereafter) "مَعَادِ" refers to the life after death, the eternal abode where individuals will be held accountable for their actions in this world. The Hadith reminds us that the intelligent person should be mindful of the Hereafter and work towards securing a better position in the afterlife. This entails striving to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through righteous actions and seeking His forgiveness for any shortcomings.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of working for the Hereafter and seeking provisions for it. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2: 219)
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters
This verse highlights the balance that Muslims should strive to achieve between their worldly responsibilities and their obligations towards the Hereafter. While it is important to fulfill our worldly duties, we should not neglect our spiritual obligations and the pursuit of eternal rewards. The intelligent person understands the transient nature of this world and prioritizes actions that will benefit them in the Hereafter.
Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah says, (18: 45)
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability
This verse serves as a reminder that the pleasures and provisions of this world are temporary and fleeting. The intelligent person understands this reality and focuses their efforts on accumulating provisions for the Hereafter, which are everlasting and of eternal value.
The consequences of adhering to the teachings of this Hadith are profound. By prioritizing actions for the Hereafter, the intelligent person ensures their success in the eternal life. They strive to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His mercy and forgiveness. Their actions are motivated by the desire to attain Paradise and avoid the punishment of Hellfire. This mindset leads to a life of righteousness, piety, and moral uprightness.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of utilizing our intellect and understanding to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam. The intelligent person recognizes the temporary nature of this world and strives to secure a better position in the Hereafter. They understand that true success lies in fulfilling their obligations towards Allah and seeking His pleasure.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the responsibility of the intelligent person to prioritize actions for the Hereafter and seek provisions for it. By understanding the transient nature of this world and the eternal rewards of the Hereafter, the intelligent person strives to fulfill their obligations towards Allah and secure success in the afterlife. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to prioritize our actions for the Hereafter and seek His pleasure.
