Verily a group worshipped Allah, the Glorified, out of desire [for reward] - that is the worship of the traders, and a group worshipped Him out of fear [of punishment] - that is the worship of the slaves, and a group worshipped Him out of gratitude - and that is the worship of the freemen.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Worship And The Worshipper)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he describes three different types of worshipers based on their motivations and intentions. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) categorizes them as those who worship Allah out of desire, fear, and gratitude.

The first group mentioned in the Hadith are those who worship Allah out of desire for reward. These individuals are driven by the hope of attaining worldly benefits or blessings in the hereafter. Their worship is akin to the worship of traders who engage in transactions with the expectation of profit. They perform acts of worship with the intention of gaining something in return. However, their focus is primarily on personal gain rather than seeking a deeper connection with Allah.

Allah, in the Quran, warns against this type of worship in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 165:

And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.

This verse highlights the importance of pure and sincere love for Allah, rather than seeking worldly gains through worship.

The second group mentioned in the Hadith are those who worship Allah out of fear of punishment. These individuals are driven by a sense of dread and apprehension, worshiping Allah to avoid His wrath and punishment. Their worship is similar to that of slaves who obey their masters out of fear of punishment. While fear of Allah's punishment is a valid motivation, it should not be the sole basis of worship.

In the Quran, Allah emphasizes the importance of balancing fear and hope in Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 90:

Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord.

This verse encourages believers to have a healthy fear of Allah's punishment, but also to have hope in His mercy and forgiveness.

The third group mentioned in the Hadith are those who worship Allah out of gratitude. These individuals recognize the countless blessings and favors bestowed upon them by Allah and worship Him as an expression of gratitude. Their worship is akin to the worship of freemen who are motivated by a sense of gratitude and appreciation for their freedom.

In the Quran, Allah repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude. In Surah Ibrahim, verse 7, Allah says:

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the significance of gratitude in attracting further blessings from Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound insight in this Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of examining their intentions and motivations in worship. While seeking rewards and fearing punishment are valid motivations, they should not be the sole basis of our worship. True worship should be driven by a deep sense of gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah.

When we worship Allah out of gratitude, our acts of worship become a means of expressing our love and appreciation for Him. This type of worship is not driven by personal gain or fear, but rather by a genuine desire to please Allah and strengthen our relationship with Him. It is a worship that emanates from the hearts of the believers, reflecting their understanding of Allah's infinite mercy and blessings.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to reflect on their intentions and motivations in worship. It encourages us to strive for a higher level of worship, one that is driven by gratitude and love for Allah. By worshiping Allah out of gratitude, we can deepen our connection with Him and experience the true essence of worship as free individuals, rather than being driven by desires or fears. May Allah guide us all to worship Him with sincerity and gratitude.
