(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truthful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ صَدَقَ نَجا۔" This can be translated into English as,
One who is truthful is saved.
This short but impactful Hadith holds deep wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.
Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (sadaqa) "صَدَقَ" means to be truthful, sincere, and honest in one's words and actions. It encompasses not only speaking the truth but also embodying truthfulness in one's character and intentions. The word (naja) "نَجا۔" means to be saved, delivered, or protected from harm or destruction. It refers to attaining salvation in this world and the hereafter.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),
And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse highlights the eternal nature of truth and the inevitable demise of falsehood. It reminds us that truthfulness is a fundamental aspect of our faith and a means to attain salvation.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises the believers, saying,
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking the truth and using words that are just and fair. It reminds us that truthfulness is not only about avoiding lies but also about using our words in a way that upholds justice and righteousness.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of truthfulness. When we are truthful in our words and actions, we are protected from the harms and pitfalls of falsehood. Truthfulness brings about numerous benefits in this life and the hereafter. It builds trust and strengthens relationships, as people are naturally drawn to those who are sincere and honest. It also brings peace of mind and contentment, as there is no fear of being exposed or living a life of deception.
On the other hand, falsehood leads to destruction and misery. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42),
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This verse highlights the danger of mixing truth with falsehood or hiding the truth knowingly. It reminds us that falsehood can never bring about true success or salvation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also serves as a motivation for us to strive for truthfulness in all aspects of our lives. It encourages us to be honest in our dealings with others, to speak the truth even when it is difficult, and to live a life of integrity. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also pave the way for our own salvation.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "مَنْ صَدَقَ نَجا۔" reminds us of the profound importance of truthfulness in our lives. It serves as a guiding principle for Muslims, urging us to be sincere and honest in our words and actions. By embodying truthfulness, we not only attain salvation but also contribute to a more just and righteous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to be among those who are truthful and saved.
